Shaping the future of curriculum design in Wales
Shaping the future of curriculum design in Wales

In this latest blog, Morgan, from the Welsh Government’s Curriculum Research team, explains how those working in schools are being offered an exciting role in shaping the future of curriculum design in Wales.

As someone at the heart of education in Wales, you’re part of an exciting change. The Curriculum for Wales is bringing a whole new approach to teaching and learning, centred around four purposes, and a shared vision for every child and young person in Wales. But no reform is complete without input from those at the centre. As one of those individuals, now is your chance to have your say.

Welsh Government wants to hear your thoughts on the Curriculum for Wales. By sharing your thoughts, you’ll help shape the support and strategies needed to make this curriculum a success.

The survey should take around 15 minutes to complete. As well as those who lead on curriculum design, assessment and progression, Welsh Government want to hear the views of those who teach and assist with teaching in primary, all-through, secondary and special schools across Wales, as well as pupil referral units (PRUs) and educated other than at school (EOTAS) settings.

Why your opinion matters

It is essential that these reforms are evaluated to ensure they are having a positive impact on learners and practitioners. Key to that is hearing your experiences and feedback.

In 2023, Welsh Government published its evaluation plan, which sets out in more detail how it intended to evaluate the reforms. This current phase of evaluation aims to find out what’s working, what’s not, and what could be done better.

Earlier this year, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Lynne Neagle, committed to providing further support for teachers to boost the roll out of Curriculum for Wales. Findings from the evaluation, including this survey, will ensure Welsh Government’s support for the sector is based on high-quality evidence.

What’s included in the survey?

The survey covers several key areas:

  • your confidence and understanding of the curriculum
  • professional learning and guidance you have accessed
  • collaboration opportunities and activities
  • changes to practice
  • pedagogy
  • progression and assessment

The questionnaire includes mostly closed questions, but there are some open-text questions at the end which provide room to elaborate and provide further comments. The survey is open until 20 December 2024.

Want to do more?

If you are especially interested in the research Welsh Government is carrying out on curriculum reform, there are plenty of chances to get involved. We are conducting a series of ‘deep-dive’ studies on topics specific to the Curriculum for Wales throughout the evaluation, and we need dedicated practitioners like you to share your insights. If you’d like to take part in any of these, you can provide your email address at the end of the survey to be recontacted. Or, if you have any further questions about the evaluation more generally, contact the Welsh Government Curriculum Research team at This email address is being protected from spambots.
