We hold training sessions in initial teacher training institutions to make sure trainees and newly qualified practitioners understand what they need to do so that they can work in Wales.
These take place between September and June and we highly recommend that you attend.
These sessions:
- give an introduction to the Education Workforce Council (EWC) and our role in the education sector in Wales
- explain why registration with the EWC is a legal requirement for education practitioners who want to work in Wales
- explore fitness to practise, focusing on the expected behaviours of a registered practitioner as set out in the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice
You should contact your course tutor for information on when this session is being held at your institution.
We encourage all students to attend the arranged session so we can answer any queries you may have directly. If you cannot attend the session, please read the introductory guide to registration we have prepared which tells you:
- why you need to be registered
- how to apply for registration
- about the EWC Code of Professional Conduct and Practice
Students doing Initial Teacher Education (ITE) (for school teachers) programmes in Wales leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
When you qualify as a teacher in Wales, you will receive notification of the award of QTS from us. The following arrangements are made so that we can issue QTS certificates to you.
Once we know that you are due to complete your teacher training course, we will email you a unique teacher reference number to both your university and personal email addresses. You will keep this throughout your career.
After all course results are verified by the relevant examination board, each ITE provider in Wales submits the results to us confirming that QTS should be awarded to successful students.
We will issue QTS certificates to all successful students on 1 August each year.
To work as a school teacher in Wales, you must be registered with us. Please refer to the registration page for more information.
