The Education Workforce Council (EWC) has welcomed two new members to its Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Accreditation Board.

Andy Liptrot, Headteacher at Sandycroft CP School, and Christine Jones, former Dean of the Institute of Education and Humanities at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, join 11 other members on the board chaired by Dr Hazel Hagger. The ITE Accreditation Board is responsible for accrediting ITE programmes across Wales.

Speaking following her appointment, Christine said “Children and young people are our future and therefore it is extremely important that we ensure they receive the best possible education.

“The opportunity to contribute to the development of teacher education appealed to me greatly, not only because of my belief in the importance of the field, but also because of my extensive experience in the world of quality and standards.”

Andy, who also sits on the EWC’s Fitness to Practice Panel said “I have been a primary school teacher since 1988 and I genuinely believe that teaching is the best job in the world. I am keen to be part of ITE in Wales to ensure our teachers of the future get the best possible experience.

“I look forward to working with the rest of the board and the range of ITE providers.”

Looking forward to her time on the board, Christine added “I am really looking forward to discussing provision with those in our universities, schools, and partnerships who work so diligently for the teachers of the future. At the same time, it will be a privilege to chat with those students who have chosen to follow such an important career, a career that can have such a positive impact on others around them.”

Bethan Stacey, Director of Professional Development, Accreditation and Policy at the EWC welcomed the new members saying “It is a pleasure to welcome two vastly experienced senior leaders from the education sector in Andy and Christine, to our board. Their knowledge of the school and university sectors, coupled with their experience of initial teacher education, will enrich our existing compliment of board members.”
