Safeguarding the profession and public

FtP case studies

This month’s fitness to practise case study highlights the consequences of unprofessional conduct in the workplace.

By examining real cases like this one, registrants can better understand how to uphold the standards of the Code, and maintain public trust in our profession.

Registrants' data

It is essential that the data we hold for registrants is current and accurate. We recently contacted registrants to remind them of this.

If you employ registrants, we encourage you to remind them to log in to their MyEWC, to check that their details are correct, and update them if not.

Council updates

New Council Chair

Congratulations to Geraint Williams who has been elected Chair of the Education Workforce Council. A heartfelt thanks to outgoing Chair, Eithne Hughes, for her dedication, commitment, and the valuable contribution she has made to the Council and the wider work of the EWC.

Guidance, resources, and professional services

On-demand resources

We’ve updated two of our webinars, Your EWC: professional registration and regulation – what it means for you and Your EWC: The Code of Professional Conduct and Practice. The new videos contain the latest information relating to the makeup of the EWC Register, and reflect changes following the publication of a revised Code.

Be sure to share these important updates with registrants in your setting.

We can also come to your location to do presentations on a range of subjects. Head to the website for more information, and to invite us to your event.

Quality Mark for Youth Work in Wales (QMYW)

Did you know that your organisation can be recognised for the excellent work you do with young people? The QMYW supports organisations and recognises improving standards within the sector. Learn more about the QMYW, and how you can register your interest for an assessment.

Data insights

Our Register contains a wealth of unique information, vital to helping us understand how the education workforce is evolving, and where further focus is needed. Our most recent data insights look at several different subjects, including school leaders, Welsh language ability in school teachers, recruitment and retention for seven of our registration categories, and qualifications with regards to school learning support workers. You can read these, and previous insights, on our website.

Events

Annual Education Workforce Statistics for Wales

In October, we held an event highlighting the key trends from this year’s data. If you missed it, or want to watch it again, it’s available now on our YouTube channel.

Recruitment and retention: trends, challenges, and policy pathways

We recently held an event looking at recruitment and retention within the education workforce in Wales, with input from a panel of experts, including three Welsh headteachers. The recording of this event will be available in the new year, so keep an eye on our social media channels, and in future newsletters. In the meantime, you can see the slides used in the presentation on our website.

In case you missed it

Christmas opening hours

The EWC offices will be closed from 16:00 on Friday 19 December 2025, until 09:00 on Monday 5 January 2026. Our website will be available during this time, including MyEWC, and the PLP.

Defnyddia dy Gymraeg

We are once again taking part in the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Defnyddia dy Gymraeg campaign (Use your Welsh). This is a chance for us to showcase how you, as stakeholders, can communicate with us in your preferred language, as well as how we are encouraging use of the Welsh language internally. Take a look at some of our social media posts to see what we’ve been doing during this campaign.

We are proud that all of services and resources are available in Welsh and English, and encourage you to communicate with us in your preferred language.
